Across the street and around a corner lies an area known as Piazza 25 Aprile. Previously, this site was part of a medieval neighborhood known as Borgo San Giovanni. On April 25, 1944, a British air unit aiming to bomb part of the railway system prematurely released the weapons projecting them on this neighborhood, killing over seventy people. Today, a plaque marks the names of those who perished and bricks have been placed to designate former homes, but it is a parking lot with some signage to remember the destruction.
This past April 25, 2024, commemorated the eightieth anniversary of the event coinciding with Italy’s celebration of Liberation Day. This is the day Italy freed itself from the Nazis and Fascists trying to take over their country. To emphasize the importance of “Pace” or peace, local citizens placed wreaths, children recited the names of the dead, and mass was celebrated.
The main historical piazza houses a museum that shares photos and movies, placing past and present images together to show the difference between the war and today. History can be lost because of the vastness of the war and its complexities. A huge thank you to the historians who continue to bring light to these events.
